With just a few days of the Microsoft’s latest Windows Operating System “Windows 7″, Pirated copy of the Windows 7 is already flooding the internet & local market around the world. Accordingly to he Microsoft press release in their Microsoft Security Intelligence Report Volume 7 (Jan – Jun 2009) about the windows software piracy world wide, said “High Software piracy would lead to the High malware rates” The simple logic behind includes the Pirated Version of the Windows would use less of the Windows Update features and hences would not able to clean computer by the updated monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool Updates.
“There is a direct correlation between piracy and the malware infection rate,” said Jeff Williams, the principal group program manager for the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. Via Computer World
The Countries ranking top in the windows software piracy included, China, Brazil, France, Serbia and Montenegro. According to the Microsoft’s latests (Nov 2009) Report, China’s piracy rate is 4 times that of the US, and low use of the Windows Update. Same is the case with the Brazil & France where Piracy rate is high and low is the Windows Update Usage. But, Microsoft could not prove their words, as the No. of computer cleaned for each 1000 execution of the Malicious Software Removal Tool that of China was just 6.7 as compared to global average of 8.7 or 8.2 that of US.
The only country, which was a real example of High Piracy High Malware included Brazil, as the infection rate was 25.4, which is nearly 3times that of global average. However, Other countries with higher-than-average infection rates, however, also have high piracy rates. Serbia and Montenegro had the highest infection rate in the world, with 97.2 PCs out of every 1,000, nearly 10%, plagued by malware. Turkey was No. 2, with 32.3, while Brazil, Spain and South Korea were third through fifth, with infection rates of 25.4, 21.6 and 21.3, respectively.

- The higher the service pack level, the lower the rate of infection
- Server versions of Windows typically display a lower infection rate on average than client versions;
- For browser-based attacks on Windows XP–based machines, Microsoft vulnerabilities
- accounted for 56.4 percent of the total.
- On Windows Vista–based machines, Microsoft vulnerabilities accounted for just 15.5 percent of the total.
- The prompt adoption of security updates and other software upgrades can significantly mitigate the spread and impact of malware
