Configure Startup Programs & Registry Entires | Microsoft Autoruns


Now, that you would be aware of many third party software, which can manage your start up programs but are you aware of the Microsoft Autorun Program which is build by Microsoft for the Advance user and free to download and use. Microsoft Autorun is a advance add-on to your current windows system which enable end user to see all the start up programs and in the sequence of their start up,  during a system boot up or log on. Autorun program is much more comprehensive and advance then the windows inbuilt function of managing the start-up.

This program includes all the program in the start up folder, Run and Run Once program plus your other registry keys. You can configure autorun to show your other third party program at start up,  including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Win logon notifications, auto-start services, and much more.

Autoruns program shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. coming on to how is this software used to manage your start up programs.

How to Disabling and Deleting Entries Via Autoruns :

Suppose, you have a entry in the start up which you do not need to start on the next boot, you have to just un check the tick against the entire, to disable the entire and You should delete items that you do not wish to ever execute. For that  just right click and press delete on the respective entire, which makes the respective entire predominantly deleted from the system.

Note : For the Safety purpose, For items stored in startup folders Autoruns creates a subfolder named Autoruns disabled. If there are disabled items in these folders when you logon Explorer will create a window to the folder on the desktop (but not execute the images within it). Check a disabled item to re-enable it.

For Vista User, you need to re-start with autorun, by clicking the button that enables you to re-lauch auto runs with administrative rights.

Displayed Locations and Entries in Autoruns :

  1. Logon This entry results in scans of standard autostart locations such as the Startup folder for the current user and all users, the Run Registry keys, and standard application launch locations.
  2. Explorer Select this entry to see Explorer shell extensions, browser helper objects, explorer toolbars, active setup executions, and shell execute hooks.
  3. Internet Explorer This entry shows Browser Helper Objects (BHO’s), Internet Explorer toolbars and extensions.
  4. Services All Windows services configured to start automatically when the system boots.
  5. Drivers This displays all kernel-mode drivers registered on the system except those that are disabled.
  6. Scheduled Tasks Task scheduler tasks configured to start at boot or logon.
  7. AppInit DLLs This has Autoruns shows DLLs registered as application initialization DLLs.
  8. Boot Execute Native images (as opposed to Windows images) that run early during the boot process.
  9. Image Hijacks Image file execution options and command prompt autostarts.
  10. Known DLLs This reports the location of DLLs that Windows loads into applications that reference them.
  11. Winlogon Notifications Shows DLLs that register for Winlogon notification of logon events.
  12. Winsock Providers Shows registered Winsock protocols, including Winsock service providers.
  13. LSA Providers Shows registers Local Security Authority (LSA).
  14. Printer Monitor Drivers Displays DLLs that load into the print spooling service.
  15. Sidebar Displays Windows Vista sidebar gadgets

Malware often installs itself as a Winsock service provider because there are few tools that can remove them. Autoruns can uninstall them, but cannot disable them.
